Made of interwoven fibers from the husks of coconuts, erosion control (EC) blankets are biodegradable fabrics used in restoration projects to protect and stabilize the soil before the roots from the vegetation you’ve planted through the blankets take hold. EC blankets are installed after all grading has taken place. They are laid down parallel to the stream with fabric left hanging into the trench dug for the coconut fiber log. The coconut fiber log will be rolled into the trench to secure the bottom of the blanket. Each roll of EC blanket is 6’ wide and 165’ long and is usually cut into 30’ sections for ease of handling. Any ends of the blankets along the streambank should overlap each other by about 1’.
