Watershed Nature Camp - Assistant Director

Watershed Nature Camp is an outdoor day camp focused on nature and ecology. We are located on the 950-acre Watershed Reserve in Hopewell Township (Mercer County), NJ. Watershed Nature Camp is a program of The Watershed Institute.

Responsibilities

– Assist in overseeing day-day operations of camp
– Encourage staff development through performance evaluation, skill developments, and continuing training
– Assist in conducting staff training, Counselor-in-Training orientation
– Assist in conducting staff meetings
– Oversee transportation of campers to and from the Reserve
– Serve as a member of the Camp administration team
– Provide excellent customer service to parents with face-face conversations, timely phone calls, and email responses on a daily basis
– Assist in maintaining the quality of the camp program by evaluating program schedules and weekly reports
– Respond to emergency situations
– Remain on-site during some overnights
– Perform duties of the Camp Director in any instance where the Camp Director is unable to perform their normal duties
– Accept other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Must be 21 or older by June 1, 2020
– Availability to work these dates:
Pre-Camp: Weekdays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 25-June 12
Staff Training: Weekdays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 15-June 26
Required to attend the Camp Family BBQ June 26 in the evening
Camp: Weekdays 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and some overnight June 29-August 28

– Management experience, or comparable leadership roles
– Experience working with children outdoors, or long-term work with children
– Current First Aid and CPR certification required
– Ability to project a high level of professionalism
– Strategic thinker with demonstrated experience in managing projects with changing priorities and tight deadlines
– Demonstration of attention to detail and organizational skills
– Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, and some G-suite applications
– Ability to keep a calm demeanor during an emergency
– Ability to work outdoors in hot, humid, New Jersey Summer weather and ability to walk on rough/uneven terrain for multiple miles
– Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.
– Flexibility is required in working hours only in the case of emergencies

Municipal Policy Specialist

The Watershed Institute, a dynamic and multifaceted non-profit conservation organization, is seeking a full-time Municipal Policy Specialist to work in its Policy Department under the direction of the Policy Director and Executive Director.

The Municipal Policy Specialist works with municipal officials, including Environmental Commissions, land use boards, and elected municipal governing bodies to promote policies and ordinances to protect clean water and the environment. This position requires appearances and speaking at municipal meetings (Planning Board, Zoning Board, Environmental Commission, etc.), state policy meetings, and regional environmental workgroup/coalition meetings. Evening hours and occasional Saturdays are required, as determined by municipal scheduling and the Policy Director. The Municipal Policy Specialist cultivates personal contacts and does community organizing in the towns in the Millstone and Central Delaware watersheds in order to assist residents with environmental issues and to garner support for environmental policies.

Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s Degree in a political, governmental or environmental field
– Knowledge of water quality and environmental issues
– Organizational and diplomatic skills, including the ability to communicate technical information effectively to a wide range of audiences
– Experience with local governments, Planning Boards, Environmental Commissions, etc.
– Excellent written, verbal, listening and public speaking skills
– Computer skills including major software packages (MS Office, G Suite) and ability to learn additional skills as necessary
– Strong team player and also comfortable working independently with minimum direction
– Ability to prioritize multiple concurrent projects

Education Manager

The Watershed Institute is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated person with strong knowledge about water and watersheds for its award-winning environmental education program, located in the LEED-Platinum Watershed Center in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. Education staff conducts approximately 400 programs annually, reaching 10,000 people, and uses its 950-acre Watershed Reserve for many outdoor programs. Among the environmental science and ecology-based programs are school field trips addressing the Next Generation Science Standards, children’s and family programs for the public, teacher workshops, and a summer nature camp. 

Deadline: March 20, interviews rolling. The position begins March/April 2020.
Salary: $40,000
Benefits: Health Insurance (medical, dental and vision), Insurance (life insurance, LTD), Vacation (15 days/for the first three years) (20 days beginning year four), 2 personal days/year, and 10 sick days/year, 9 paid holidays/year, retirement plan 403(b).

Responsibilities:
• Manage program bookings for schools and birthday parties by scheduling groups appropriately, managing spaces and staff, invoicing, processing payments and keeping records. Remain knowledgeable on all offerings for these programs.
• Manage public program scheduling, publishing, registrations, recordkeeping, and payments, using the organization-wide calendar (Google Calendar) and the organization-wide registration and member management system (DoubleKnot).
• Coordinate with financial department, Camp Director, and Assistant Director of Education to manage scholarship program for summer camps and academies.
• Assist with all departmental job announcements, employment applications, and interview scheduling. Collect and process new hire onboarding paperwork.
• Coordinate with development and communications department on education program promotion by providing program reports and supplying public program content as requested for the quarterly newsletter, website, and social media.
• Record departmental income and expenses. Provide reports to financial department as requested.
• Create weekly, monthly, and yearly reports of program attendance and income.
• Create and update departmental brochures as needed.
• Manage and maintain accurate records in donor/member databases (DonorPerfect, DoubleKnot) as they pertain to education programs.
• Attend mandatory annual events (Butterfly Festival, FEST, and Annual Meeting).
• Assist at the Welcome Desk as needed to process shop sales and program registrations.
• Develop systems for using Doubleknot for school programs.
• Assist in mentorship and supervision of interns and volunteers.
• Assist staff on occasional facility maintenance, office tasks, and other projects as necessary for the smooth operation of the facility.

General Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree
• 3-5 years of leadership experience overseeing educational programs
• 2 years of office management experience, preferably non-profit
• 2 years of experience supervising staff and volunteers
• Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification
