World Water Day Festival – March 23

March 2nd, 2019

Ever wanted to travel through the water cycle as a drop of water? Or explore the aquatic residents of the Stony Brook?

Want to learn why water droplets cling to themselves and other objects? Or do a taste test of water samples from a variety of sources in our watershed?

You’ll have your chance on March 23 when The Watershed Institute will hold its inaugural World Water Day Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Get stamps on your Water Passport and collect aquatic super-critter cards.

Water is our most precious natural resource—without it, all life would perish.  Water is also incredibly fragile and vulnerable to many threats, from various sources of pollution to climate change. Water’s complex character has inspired artists, ignited political wars, and influenced the growth of cities.

Family fun on World Water Day will include hiking to the Stony Brook, exploring macroinvertebrates under microscopes in our lab. Consider casting a fly fishing rod and marvel as experts create colorful fishing lures.

A mermaid will tell stories, a musician will play folk music and a local author will sell copies of her book. The day will feature short environmental films and art displays. At midday, there will be a presentation on a family-owned commercial shad fishery in Lambertville.

Come play water-themed games outside and inside the LEED Platinum-certified Watershed Center. Visit our pools to learn about fish migration and aquatic food webs. Play games including the H20 Olympics game, a water cycle game, and simulation of gathering water in different parts of the world. Hands-on activities also include a display that demonstrates how human activities impact water and the environment.
