November: Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of the first inhabitants of the United States.

Today, the State of New Jersey recognizes three tribes:  Ramapough Lenape Nation, Powhatan Renape Nation, and Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation.

The tribes reside within a vast area known as Lenapehoking containing the Delaware, Millstone, Raritan and other watersheds in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware that was historically inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape people.

This November, please take the time to learn about Native American indigenous cultures, including the Lenni-Lenape people, the original stewards of land and water in our region. Check out the resources below to learn more about some of the indigenous people in this area.
