NJ Must take REAL Action NOW

NJ Must Act Now on Stronger Flood Rules

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has launched new programs to raise awareness about climate impacts like flooding, drought, and extreme heat. These are important steps—but awareness alone will not protect our communities.

The DEP has promised to adopt the NJPACT REAL rules, which will strengthen building and planning standards to reflect the realities of rising seas, stronger storms, and worsening flooding. These rules are urgently needed to safeguard people, property, and infrastructure.

We’ve already seen the devastating toll of climate disasters. Hurricane Ida in 2021 claimed 30 lives, destroyed homes, and disrupted livelihoods here in New Jersey. Without updated protections, more residents will be left vulnerable.

We have been waiting since 2020 for these rules to be adopted and we cannot wait any longer. Recently, the rules were weakened, but they are still better than doing nothing. Every delay means more risk, more loss, and more preventable tragedy. We are very close, but we are not done.

Take Action Today: Tell Governor Murphy and NJDEP to adopt the NJPACT REAL rules immediately—before the next storm hits. Please urge the Governor not to delay any more.  He and his administration need to follow through on his commitment to protect New Jersey.   The Resilient Environments and Landscapes Rule must be adopted and implemented immediately.
