Federal Government Limits Protections for Nation’s Waterways

Today with the adoption of its “Navigable Waters Protection Rule”, the EPA and the Army Corp of Engineers reverses decades of protections for small waterways, headwaters, and wetlands.  Today’s rule starts an open season on filling wetlands and headwaters.

By adopting this rule, EPA and the Army Corp of Engineers disregards a large body of scientific study and ignores its own handpicked scientific advisory board.   By severely limiting what kinds of waterways receive protections, this Rule ignores the Clean Water Act’s requirement that the nation “restore and maintain” our waterways for recreation, fishing, and aquatic life.

The Watershed Institute will continue to work with the State and municipalities to strengthen protections to our waterways.
