The Delaware River Watershed Fellowship is a 12-week, paid summer job opportunity designed to introduce young people from local communities to careers in environmental education. Fellows are hired at one of 23 environmental education centers across the Delaware River Watershed. Fellows participate in training sessions to help prepare them for a summer of helping people connect with nature and informing their local communities about issues affecting the Delaware River, the source of drinking water for 15 million people living in the region. 

The Watershed Institute is a member of the Alliance for Watershed Education (AWE), is seeking to hire a Fellow from the Greater Trenton area to help connect with local community members around protecting the Delaware River and its waterways. 

Position Location: The Fellow will work onsite at The Watershed Institute, 31 Titus Mill Road, Pennington, NJ 08534 as well as in Trenton. 

Compensation: Fellows are paid $16.50/hr, 35-40 hours a week over the summer. 

Duties: 

  • Fellows will participate in a 3-day mandatory watershed education training, at the Pocono Environmental Education Center (overnight, June 10-12.) http://www.peec.org/   
  • Fellows will help lead programs and activities for community members and visitors to The Watershed Institute. 
  • Fellows will attend in-person meetings with Fellows from other AWE Centers. 
  • With guidance from their supervisor and mentors, Fellows will focus their efforts on a specific Capstone Project and present their work at the end-of-program Summit event (August 14). 
  • Fellows will document their progress by completing a short log report every week. 

At The Watershed Institute the AWE Fellow will specifically: 

  •  Assist with the maintenance and care of the Kate Gorrie butterfly house.  
  • Learn how to care for caterpillars, butterflies, and their native host plants, while learning about their importance in the environment. 
  • Assist with educating visitors to the butterfly house and rain gardens. This includes presenting scheduled educational programs and facilitating interactions with casual visitors to the house and gardens.  
  • Engage a partner organization in the Greater Trenton Area in a Capstone project. 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Age 18+ by June 8, 2026 start date. 
  • A background in environmental education is not required. 
  • A positive attitude and willingness to greet visitors and start conversations with them.  
  • Ability to work outdoors in the summer to maintain gardens. Willingness to get your hands in the soil.  
  • Willingness to touch insects including caterpillars and insect predators.  
  • Willingness to learn and teach about pollinators, native plants, and rain gardens.  
  • Conversational Spanish language abilities are a plus.  
  • Ability to travel to Pennington a minimum of 3 days a week – limited travel compensation is available from the Alliance for Watershed Education.  
  • Fellows will work part time in Trenton, NJ. Familiarity with community groups in Trenton is a plus. 


Essential dates:

  • June 10-12: Fellowship Orientation (overnight) at Pocono Environmental Education Center (Meals, transportation, and accommodation provided) 
  • August 14: Watershed Fellowship Summit

Job Title: Water Policy Associate

About The Watershed Institute:   

The Watershed Institute is dedicated to keeping central New Jersey’s water clean, safe, and healthy. Through a combination of conservation, advocacy, science, and education, we work to protect and restore our environment and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.  

Position Summary: 

The Watershed is seeking a bilingual (English and Spanish speaking)  advocate to work with six municipalities (Hightstown, East Windsor, Hamilton, Trenton, North Brunswick, and Manville). The Watershed Policy Associate will work with community members, elected officials and municipal staff to develop and implement policies and practices to reduce flooding and protect and improve water quality. 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Providing education and technical support relating to: 
  • Developing Watershed Improvement Plans required by the new Municipal Separate StormSewer System (MS4)permit 
  • Development and adoption of municipal ordinances impacting flooding and water quality including stormwater management, tree protection and stream corridor 
  • Promoting watershed scale regional planning to address flooding and water quality issues; 
  • Building relationships with community groups, providing forums for residents to share information about how flooding and water quality are affecting them and to engage them in advocating and taking individual action to address the issues; 
  • Developingstrategies and tools to provide Spanish speaking populations with education and opportunity to engage with efforts to address flooding and improve water quality; 
  • Being the backbone staff for the Jersey  Water Works   Green Infrastructure Committee. Meetings are quarterly via Teams or Zoom, with one in-person meeting once or twice a year. Duties include creating and sending out the agenda, sending the meeting invites, hosting meetings, and uploading attendance and meeting notes to Basecamp; 
  • And other duties as assigned. 

Please note: This job requires attendance at municipal meetings, which often take place in the evenings. 

Qualifications: 

  • Fluent speaking and writing in Spanish 
  • Familiarity with municipal government and/or environmental policy 
  • Passion for the environment

Job Title: Director of Finance & Administration

The Watershed Institute, a dynamic and multifaceted nonprofit conservation organization, is seeking a full-time Director of Finance & Administration (DF&A)As a key member of the senior leadership team, the DF&A will provide full-cycle accounting and financial operations, including strategic financial guidance and operational oversight to support our mission. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Board of Trustees, this role is responsible for overseeing the finance and administration department, including preparing and maintaining all financial records, budgets, financial statements, risk, investments, compliance, IT and HR.  

The Watershed Institute is dedicated to keeping water clean, safe, and healthy, and pursues its mission through programs in environmental advocacy, watershed science, environmental education, and land conservation. The organization is headquartered at the LEED-Platinum Watershed Center on a 950-acre nature reserve near Pennington, New Jersey. The organization is supported by more than $22 million in endowment and other investments, a bold five-year Strategic Plan, and a new Campus Plan, which we expect to execute over the next several years.  

Key Responsibilities:   

Financial Management 

  • Maintaining the accuracy and integrity of all financial information, records, and assets 
  • Manage A/P, A/R, payroll, cash operations, and check processing 
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity to ensure operational stability 
  • Maintain the G/L and Chart of Accounts 
  • Prepare monthly (and yearly) closes and reconcile monthly financial statements. 
  • Prepare regular financial reports for distribution to the Board of Trustees and senior staff 
  • Develop policies and procedures and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency of the department and organization 
  • Conduct internal control reviews, risk assessments, and compliance audits for grants, endowments, and restricted funds, strengthening controls and reducing errors by updating procedures and aligning policies with GAAP 
  • Supervise staff accountant, HR & IT staff 
  • Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, investment managers, and other financial services providers 
  • Ensure compliance with all financial and other regulations, including tax, audit, charity, real estate, and other. Preparing IRS Form 990 documentation, and property filings 
  • Collaborate closely with senior team to execute strategic plans and goals that support the organization’s mission and vision 


Budgeting and Forecasting 

  • Compile annual budget in conjunction with the department heads and provide monthly forecasts based on financial performance 
  • Serve as liaison for the Finance committee, attend meetings, and maintain minutes 


Grants Reporting and Forecasting 

  • Collaborate with Senior Director of Advancement to prepare grant reports, overseeing accounting, reimbursements, and compliance requirements 


Investment Management 

  • Maintain relationship with external investment manager, and facilitate communications between manager and Finance Committee 


Financial Audit and Compliance 

  • Oversee annual audit of financial statements. Serve as liaison and support to independent auditors 
  • Oversee tax filings, including 990, tax-exempt and farmland assessment filings, and CRI related compliance documentation 
  • Prepare and file annual federal and state returns and reports 
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit, labor, tax, grant, and charitable registrations. 
  • Maintain non-profit and charitable organization status  


Property Insurance and Contracts 

  • Monitor liability insurance coverage (general, D&O, property, auto, etc.). Maintain policies and coordinate renewals 
  • Manage insurance requirements for Summer Camp 
  • Review insurance claims and risk mitigation strategies 
  • Coordinate legal review of contracts as needed 
  • Oversee document retention and records management policies 
  • Monitor cybersecurity, data privacy, and operational risk considerations 
  • Assess risk and obtain permits as needed 


Leadership and Strategic Planning 

  • Maintain organizational strategy and implementation 
  • Provide financial and operational guidance to support mission-driven decision-making and ensure financial sustainability 
  • Ensure alignment between financial resources and programmatic priorities 


IT and HR 

  • Supervise and support IT staff  
  • Oversee technology budgeting and planning 
  • Support implementation and maintenance of software, hardware and databases 
  • Evaluate technology needs to improve operational efficiency 
  • Coordinate hardware and software procurement and lifecycle management 
  • Assist HR staff with various tasks

Qualifications: 

  • Strong expertise in GAAP-compliant nonprofit accounting, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, grants and fund management, audit coordination, and internal controls, along with full ownership of month- and year-end close processes and reconciliation 
  • Knowledge of financial statement preparation and GAAP accounting standards 
  • Experience with computerized accounting systems (QBO) and spreadsheets 
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365. 
  • Ability to work well as a team player
